Shonen Knife is a pop-punk all-girl Japanese band that formed in the early 1980s and are still around making music today! In January of this year, they released their latest album called "Free Time". I loved this group. They are so kitschy and great fun. And after 30 years in the music business, these girls still look so fresh and kawaii!
The video below is from their 2009 album "Super Group."
Below is one of my favorites, "Tomato Head" from their 1993 album "Rock Animals."

Pink Lady was a Japanese Pop Duo in the late 70s, early 80s comprised of two young women, Mie and Kei. They were huge pop idols when I lived in Okinawa. I remember hearing "Kiss in the Dark" (the song in the video below) non-stop for a while there!
Pink Lady is actually only one of two Japanese recording artists to have reached the US Billboard Top 40, hitting #37 on the charts with "Kiss in the Dark." In 1980, they ended up with a very short-lived television shown in America on NBC called Pink Lady. It was a variety type of show with musical numbers, comedy and skits. It did not do well and was canceled after only five episodes.
Enjoy this blast from the past!
This video is from Japanese television and has Japanese subtitles because Mie and Kei sang the song in English.
Hi everyone! This is Kawaii-M, sorry to have been gone for so long. Have been under the weather but I am feeling better now and will be posting again! Hope everyone is doing well!
One of my favorite Sanrio characters is Chococat! I love that little guy. Here's a cute video we found on youtube from contributor cassie1619 featuring the lovable Chococat.
According to the official Sanrio website, Chococat is a little boy cat who was born on May 10 and tends to be a bit scatterbrained at times! But, thanks to his ultra-sensitive antenna whiskers he's always up on the latest news. His name comes from his chocolate colored nose! Chococat loves playing with his friends.
Hope you enjoyed this little insight into Chococat! Have a super kawaii day!!

Here's a video of author La Carmina on the Today Show doing a kawaii cooking demonstration. Her Gothic Lolita style is adorable and the food is just too cute. I'm not big into cooking, but this might inspire me. I just might have to get her book!
ABOUT THE BOOK: Enter the magical world of Cute Yummy Time, where simple pancakes become adorable koalas, grilled cheese sandwiches become hippos, and lemon tarts look like puppies.
The Japanese cult of kawaii ("ka-why-ee," or all things cute) has spread to every aspect of living - including food. Japan's newest trend: school lunches dolled up as adorable creatures. They're feast for the eyes, but not all the ingredients may be familiar to Western palates.
Cute Yummy Time thinks outside the bento box, sharing more than 70 recipes for making food "so cute, you could just eat it." Using familiar and nutritious foods, author La Carmina shows you how to easily turn even the most mundane meal into a squeal-worthy sensation.
Deco sweets charms and accessorizing has become all the rage in Japan. It's so kawaii to see the little tasties dangling from a cell phone or adorning an ipod. Below is a tutorial we found on youtube from ilyatoni on how to make a super kawaii cake charm. Enjoy!!
I loved the Monchichi dolls when I was a kid living on Okinawa. I had several of them and even a giant one. Here's an old 80s American Monchichi commercial I came across. Monchichi dolls were so kawaii! Enjoy!

A few days ago we did a post on kawaii bento. The amount of creativity and passion that goes into creating bento is so fascinating and inspirational to me. To take something as mundane and simple as a boxed lunch and to make it into a work of art created with love is absolutely wonderful! Below is a video we found of a mom making bento for her children! The inventiveness is amazing and the final product is uber kawaii. Enjoy!

Sure this is cute, but what is exactly is bento, you ask. Bento is a single-portion packed meal, usually lunch, that is common in Japan. The container to hold the meal is referred to as a bento box. Bento boxes come in a wide variety of styles to appeal to everyone from businessmen and young women to children. Bento boxes usually have internal dividers and several stacked layers so that the different kinds of food sit in their own little compartments. The whole thing is usually wrapped together with chopsticks in a cloth or special bag.
A traditional bento consists of rice, sometimes noodles, fish or meat, and one or more pickled or cooked vegetables. It is still common for Japanese homemakers to spend time and energy for their spouse, child, or themselves producing a carefully prepared lunch box. Color combinations of the food and garnish are carefully considered in creating an artful presentation. The goal is to make the whole package as attractive as possible and often times an artfully prepared bento is an expression of affection.
